The city already has extensive laws around tobacco. The city bans the sale of “flavored tobacco” products except for menthol, mint and wintergreen, bans the purchase of tobacco products by anyone under 21 years of age and has one of the highest local and state cigarette tax rates at $5.85 per pack.
New York City’s proposed menthol ban is about telling adults what they can and cannot do.
History and common sense tell us that bans and prohibitions targeting legal adult choices won’t work, will have unintended consequences and can result in selective enforcement in our communities.
Tell your councilmember that they should vote “NO” on the proposed menthol ban. Let them know that you make the informed decision to use a legal product and shouldn’t have your choices stripped away.
